Photos - Spain - Santiago de Compostela
We
were told that pilgrims walk to the church in the town of Santiago
de Compostela from far away places, for example one route starts
in Cornwall. When we visited, we parked at the far end of the car park
so we could
join in the personal sacrifice.
While
in the church the children asked what the large metal object hanging
from a rope is for. Debbie explained in a hushed voice
that it was for burning incense during services. When we visited
the church shop afterwards they saw a picture of it on a postcard,
they then asked why it was filled with insects and bugs.
While
here we experienced the beginning of what was to turn into very bad
period of weather for Spain and Portugal. One evening it rained heavily
all night with lightening, thunder and strong winds. The television
coverage showed houses and Cafés flooded and complete villages
cut off. Luckily we were on the side of a large hill so remained relatively
unaffected.

There are hundreds of these buildings attached to houses

Some are really old (why the spikes?) We think they are grain stores

The church door is VERY big
