Photos - Spain - El Rocio
It
was with heavy hearts that we left our beloved Portugal. However, we
had to stay true to our pledge of touring Europe and Spain beckoned.
We
had been told about a small town in a national park that is quite
unusual. El Rocio is as close to a cowboy town as you could get without
being in the USA, or being a cowboy. The streets are made of deep sand
and every house has a post
to tie a horse to. We
stayed just outside the town in a nice friendly campsite (I said I
would mention the free internet access on the web site, so here it
is, mentioned).
That
evening we took a look around El Rocio. Strangely there was no poo,
or smell, or flies, or horses actually. Well that's not quite true,
we did see two. Apparently
it all happens at the weekend, hundreds of horses, lots of processions,
lots of Spanish, but this was Thursday. Horses and the Spanish must
not like Thursdays.
We
tried to eat out but all the menus were in Spanish and as this inland,
no one spoke English. Lesson learnt, buy the phrase book BEFORE entering
the country. It
takes ages to get anywhere due to
driving through the sand and once you have got over the horse theme
there isn't a lot else to see, especially on Thursdays. As El Rocio
did not hold a lot for us we decided to move on to Seville the next
day.

A nice pitch and no need to put up a clothes line to keep others away
