Situated on Europe's largest inland sea, our campsite was enormous with over a thousand pitches. I can see why the site was recommended to us; each pitch is leveled with gravel and surrounded by a tall hedge as well as being large enough for the caravan, awning, table and chairs and car.

Whoops I sound like a caravanning magazine, sorry about that.

Large gravel plot, with water!

At the end of the site was a restaurant on the beach of the inland sea. The sea itself is massive with its own islands (that can be hired for 10,000€ a week) and is very popular for water sports. Unfortunately, as there is little tide on the Mediterranean the beach did not get its daily wash and was therefore very dirty. The children loved it as it was very shallow and they could walk out for a long distance into the sea without drowning, however Debbie's umbilical cord does not stretch that far and I had to call them back to land.

While the English pensioners sit in the sun with a cup of tea (or more likely, a beer), the Germans and Dutch are busy in the water on their windsurfers. It was like an advert for Bupa; in would come a wet suit clad man who would disrobe to reveal a grey haired pensioner - a silver surfer, literally!

The area around the campsite had the usual couple of miles of hotels and apartment complexes with a big main road running down the middle, all a gnats whisker away from the beach. I am convinced that if I put a bucket of sand and sea water in the middle of a field, a Spanish developer would come along and build around it.

Get in the car and you can find a nice town; like Cartegena, very cosmopolitan with a lot of history. We had a nice day there with a trip around the harbour in a boat and a climb up to the castle. There was also the guns at Mazaroon, an amazing ex-military base on top of a mountain that has just been abandoned.

Spain seems to be improving as we go North.

On our boat trip in Cartagena we saw a submarine returning to base

It was too windy for Hazel though
